Australia's largest tennis stadium, and for many years the home of the Australian Tennis Open, Rod Laver Arena is a tennis stadium that is part of the Melbourne Park Sports complex, it has been the main venue for the Australian Open in tennis since 1988, it is named in honour of Rod Laver, a three-time winner of the Australian Open and one of world's greatest tennis players. The arena was finished in 1988 with a seating capacity of 14,820. The venue currently attracts over 1.5 million visitors per year.
The Arena features a retractable roof allowing competitors to continue play during rain or extreme heat. It is the centerpiece of Melbourne Park's Tennis Centre, and besides tennis, the arena hosts motorbike super cross, music concerts, conferences, World Wrestling Entertainment events (since 2005), and ballets.
In 2009, the arena polled 9th out of 50 worldwide top arenas for first-quarter ticket sales, making it the second highest ticket selling venue in Australia, second to Sydney's Acer Arena, which placed third.
Although the walk incorporates some of the nicest areas of Melbourne, at approximately 3Km, it is not a short stroll, allow approximately 30minutes.
From the hotel, walk left into Bourke St. and walk 4 blocks to Swanston St., turn right into Swanston St, go past the Melbourne Town Hall, and past St. Paul's Cathedral and you are at Federation Square, cross the square to the Yarra River banks and turn left along the river bank, in a minute or so, you will be at Birrarung Marr Park, follow the path, but please stop to enjoy the sculptures and the gardens, Rod Laver Arena is just ahead, at the end of the park.
Option 1
From the hotel, walk right into Bourke St and walk approximately 80 meters to the Tram Stop at the corner of Spencer and Bourke St. Catch any tram travelling down Spencer St and hop off athe 2nd tram stop, corner of Flinders St. Then catch Tram number 70 (Wattle Park Tram) and hop off at Rod Laver.
Option 2
On leaving the hotel turn right into Bourke St. and walk around 80 meters to the corner of Spencer St. Walk left into Spoencer St. and walk 3 blocks to the corner of Flinders St. Now catch Tram number 70 (Wattle Park Tram) and hop of at Rod Laver Arena.
Taxis from Alto Hotel to Rod Laver Arena should cost around $14 and take approximately 15 minutes, please allow at least double that time if travelling in peak time.
